Toenail Troubles? 5 Burning Questions Answered

For most of us, the extent of our nail care routine involves trimming (and maybe some polish.) But there are so many little details surrounding our toenails that can be the source of surprising discomfort.

That’s why, in this article, we at Amarillo Foot Specialists are answering our patients’ 5 most frequently asked questions.

Q: How Short Should I Be Cutting My Toenails?

A: Aim to trim your toenails straight across by leaving them slightly longer than the tip of your toe. Cutting them too short can increase the risk of ingrown toenails.

Q: Why Is Skin Growing Under My Toenail?

A: Piggybacking off the last question, this could be due to improper trimming technique. Cutting your nails too short or rounding the edges can encourage the skin to grow over the nail. Also, injury to the toe can cause the nail to lift, which allows skin to grow underneath.

Note that fungal infections can have a similar effect on the nail, causing it to thicken and separate from the nail bed.

Q: My Toenails Are Brittle And Keep Breaking. What Can I Do?

A: Brittle nails can be caused by various factors, including aging, nutritional deficiencies, and underlying health conditions. Be sure to remember the 3 Ls:

  • Lotion: Keep your nails and cuticles hydrated by applying moisturizer regularly.

  • Liquid: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out.

  • Limited Exposure: Limit exposure to harsh chemicals and detergents that can dry out your nails.

Also, be sure to get enough vitamins and minerals- particularly biotin, iron, and zinc to promote healthy nails!

Q: Why Do My Toenails Have Ridges?

A: Vertical ridges on your toenails are often a normal sign of aging. However, deep or horizontal ridges can sometimes indicate underlying health issues like kidney disease, thyroid problems, or psoriasis. If you're concerned, consult a doctor or podiatrist… leading us to our last question:

Q: When Should I See A Podiatrist About My Toenails?

A: Consult a podiatrist if you experience ingrown toenails, persistent pain or discomfort, signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus), thickened or discolored nails, or nail separation from the nail bed.
