Your 5-Day Plan for Spring-Ready Feet
Spring is here and summer will be here before you know it, which means that it’s time once again to take off our socks and expose our feet to the sun. But this year you don’t need to worry about getting your feet ready for the warmer weather. Today Dr. Brandon Holloway and Dr. Travis Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists are sharing their 5-day foot plan to make your feet soft and sandal-ready.
Day #1: Pamper your feet with a skin-softening soak. The perfect way to start your springtime foot care is with a skin-softening footbath. When you soak your feet in a warm water bath for 15 to 20 minutes, it not only begins to break down tough calluses, corns and heel fissures, but it also provides a boost to your circulation and gives your soles and toes a healthy glow. Adding Epsom salt, citrus, essential oil and fresh herbs enhances the relaxing benefits of a footbath.
Day #2: Apply moisturizing cream both day and night. When foot skin is well cared for, it isn’t only soft and beautiful, it’s also better equipped to fight common foot issues like calluses, plantar warts, blisters, and fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. Applying a high-quality cream to your feet day and night helps soothe cracked skin that leaves your feet susceptible to infections.
Day #3: Tackle tough corns and calluses. Most of these issues will have already responded to your foot wellness plan by day three and they should be considerably reduced. But if persistent corns and calluses still remain, you may want to consider a more concentrated treatment. There are several home remedies you can try as well as over-the-counter products that are made to specifically tackle stubborn patches of dry skin. You can also use a pumice stone, file or electric callus remover to help remove the dead skin.
Day #4: Treat yourself to a pedicure. At this point, your feet should be ready for a pedicure. Now is the perfect time to treat yourself, either at a nail salon or at home.
Day #5: Support your feet with proper footwear. Now that your feet are ready for spring and summer, it’s time to collect a cache of supplies to keep them healthy and pain-free. A few beneficial items to have on hand include:
Supportive, comfortable summer shoes;
Blister plasters or dressings;
Sunscreen (yes, your feet need it too!);
A compact tube of foot moisturizer;
Baby wipes for spur-of-the-moment cleansing;
Nail polish for pedicure touchups.
