Things are getting back to “normal” and it’s time to go back to school! And your child’s new school shoes will help them put their best feet forward going into the new school year! Don’t take chances - Dr. Mark Thompson and Dr. Brandon Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists located in the Amarillo, TX panhandle are sharing this handy guide to help you choose the best shoes for your children.

Here’s what you should consider when buying new shoes for your child.

1. What ‘the right fit’ actually means. Having the right fit can decrease the risk of many short-term problems like corns and blisters, and long-term issues like curly toes or bunions. Fight the urge to buy shoes that are too big for your children’s feet thinking they will “grow into them.”

2. Fasteners that are adjustable, like laces, Velcro, or buckles are a foot-saver. Wearing shoes with an adjustable fastener is a better option than a slip-on. A good fastener secures the shoe to the foot, so the toes don’t have to claw to grip the shoe.

3. The heel counter is important. This is the rear part of the shoe that covers the back of the heel, and a strong deep heel counter with firm support on both sides of the heel is recommended.

4. The shoes are fortified at the shank. The shank is the secure reinforcement of the shoe that is attached to the middle of the sole. It provides support for the foot and extends the life of the shoe. Your child’s shoes should bend just before the toes naturally because this is where the bones in their feet bend as they take the next step.

5. The shoe has some arch support and cushioning. As children tend to lead an active lifestyle, a cushioned heel absorbs shock and protects their joints. Shoes that have arch support and thick soles make it less painful for them to walk or stand. Arch supports protect the structures of the feet like joints and ligaments.

6. The shoe is rather lightweight. When the shoe is too heavy, the feet, legs, and muscles must work harder to support daily living and the muscles will tire more quickly. Lightweight shoes are best, particularly when muscle strength is still developing in your young child.

7. The shoes are constructed from good materials. Shoes should be made from a high-quality breathable material that keeps sweaty feet in a water-resistant environment and breathable, to reduce the threat of blisters, smelly feet, or fungal infections!  School shoes should also have a sturdy rubber outsole, and a high-quality shock-absorbing midsole to let kids be active all day comfortably.
