How Your Kidney Health Directly Impacts Your Feet

We often think of our kidneys and feet as separate entities, but as with every organ, the feet are more connected to them than we think. Kidney conditions, particularly chronic kidney disease (CKD), can significantly impact foot health and lead to a range of complications. For National Kidney Awareness Month, we at Amarillo Foot Specialists will detail those issues in today’s article, as well as empower you with a list of action steps to care for your kidneys and feet.

How Kidney Conditions Affect Foot Health

The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining the body's internal balance by filtering waste products and excess fluid from the blood. However, when kidney function is impaired, it can lead to a buildup of toxins and fluid imbalances.

For instance, fluid retention can cause swelling in the feet and ankles, so wearing shoes and walking comfortably can be difficult. Additionally, kidney problems can affect sweat and oil production, leading to dry, cracked skin on the feet, especially the heels, which can increase the risk of infections.

For those with chronic kidney disease, the nerves in the feet can be damaged, and the numbness, tingling, and pain that results from it increases the risk of injuries, ulcers, and infections. Similar risks can occur due to damaged blood vessels and lack of blood flow, which can reduce sensation in the feet.

Protecting Your Feet and Kidneys

Luckily, there are things you can do to treat and manage kidney disease and the foot problems that stem from it. Commit to these action steps:

  • Manage Underlying Conditions: Control conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can contribute to kidney disease, and get regular checkups with your doctor to monitor your kidney function.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support kidney function and prevent dehydration, which can worsen kidney problems.

  • Healthy Diet: Follow a balanced diet low in sodium and processed foods to reduce strain on your kidneys.

  • Foot Care: Practice good foot hygiene, wear comfortable shoes, and inspect your feet regularly for any problems.

  • Medications: Depending on the underlying kidney condition, medications may be prescribed to manage blood pressure, control fluid levels, or address other complications. Pain medications or other therapies may be used to manage nerve pain or discomfort associated with kidney-related foot problems. Consult your trusted podiatrist for a prescription.

  • Wound Care: Proper wound care is necessary to prevent infections and encourage foot ulcers to heal. This may involve regular cleaning and, in some cases, antibiotics.

  • Footwear and Orthotics: Supportive footwear and custom orthotics can help redistribute pressure, improve foot alignment, and reduce the risk of injuries and ulcers.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Managing weight and staying active can help improve circulation and overall health.
