Throughout time, gift-giving has been a fun part of holiday celebrations. But sometimes, it can be difficult to find the perfect gift, especially for the seniors in our lives. It can be particularly challenging because it can seem like they already have everything they could ever want. This holiday season, why not consider gifting items to help the seniors in your life care for their feet? Today Dr. Mark Thompson and Dr. Brandon Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists are sharing some ideas.

The feet of seniors require extra loving care for a number of reasons. One is that as we age, our circulation is not as robust, and we become more at risk for serious diseases that can have a serious effect on our feet, such as diabetes.

Properly caring for the lower limbs helps prevent more serious problems from developing, and helps seniors maintain their flexibility and mobility. Some fairly simple items can help seniors care for their feet - and they can make great holiday gifts too! Here are three of our favorites.

Warm Slippers: Slippers with thick, supportive soles can help keep feet warm and toasty, particularly for diabetics. Choose a pair that has thick, durable soles to protect the feet if they step on a sharp object. For someone with diabetes, this is crucial for the prevention of injuries like diabetic ulcers.

Socks: While our children may not like getting socks on Christmas morning, for a senior who suffers from diminished circulation, a thick pair of socks can make the difference between icy toes and warm, toasty toes. Synthetic or woolen socks that have moisture-absorbing properties are the best option because they help pull perspiration away from the skin.

Pampering: Let’s not forget that there are also a number of other gift ideas that don’t involve footwear. Because it becomes more challenging to keep skin nourished as we age, a good moisturizing foot cream can be a great – and useful - gift. Get creative - foot bath crystals and foot soaking tubs are other great ideas.

This Christmas show the seniors in your life that you really care by giving them a thoughtful gift they can really use.
