A popular resolution at this time of year is to start taking better care of our health. And while this is always a fine idea, Dr. Mark Thompson and Dr. Brandon Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists find that most people make the mistake of not considering their foot health until they experience an issue.

However, as any podiatrist will tell you, keeping your feet healthy also benefits your overall health. They can be a sign of what is going on with the rest of your body, ranging anywhere from diminished blood circulation to poor posture.

Today we’re sharing five resolutions to get - and maintain - healthier feet in 2020.

1. Follow a daily foot care regimen.  Before bed each night, thoroughly wash and dry your feet and apply a good moisturizer to help prevent cracking and dryness.

2. Watch what you eat. What you eat has an effect on your body, and that includes your feet, too. To maintain healthy feet, try to cut back on foods that cause inflammation in the body, such as artificial trans fats and sugar.

3. Stop putting up with foot pain. If your feet are constantly bothering you, it’s time to visit your podiatrist. In many instances foot pain can be the result of the interaction between the way you walk and the shoes you wear.

4. Limit time spent wearing high heels and flip-flops. Flip-flops don’t provide any support, and they leave your feet vulnerable to injury and infection. High heels tend to put your feet in an unnatural position that can have an effect on the structure of the foot resulting in calluses, corns, and bunions.

5. Get plenty of exercise. Walking, which is one of the most basic forms of exercise, is great for keeping your feet in shape. Healthy feet are vital for people who work on their feet all day or play sports.

Don’t overlook your foot health in 2020! Following these resolutions can help relieve or prevent foot pain.
