10 Tips for Back-To-School Shoe Shopping

It may feel like summer, but soon those yellow school buses will once again be rolling to mark the beginning of another school year. So, it’s time to store away the sandals and flip-flops and go back-to-school shoe shopping! And Dr. Mark Thompson and Dr. Brandon Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists located in the Amarillo, TX panhandle are here to help with their top 10 tips.

Remember, parents, when it comes to shoe shopping, it’s up to you to be firm! When your child begs for the latest designer shoes, ballerina-like slippers, or Iron Man sneakers, don’t give in! Instead, focus on selecting properly fitting shoes that are comfortable and provide adequate support for optimal foot health.

10 Back-to-School Shopping Tips

  1. Because children’s feet grow so fast, it’s important to have both feet measured every time you shop. Check width, arch position, and length, and purchase the larger foot size.

  2. Take your child shoe shopping later in the day when their feet are largest.

  3. Teach your child to choose sturdy shoes with closed toes; make it seem like it’s their idea!

  4. Bring a pair of your child’s socks to wear when trying on shoes. You may want to invest in high-quality, comfortable, and durable new socks.

  5. The heel should be sturdy and not collapse when you press down on both sides of the heel.

  6. Be sure the shoe doesn’t twist in the center.

  7. Make sure the toe flexibility is firm and not too pliable.

  8. Chose styles with Velcro fasteners or laces to keep the shoe firmly on the foot.

  9. Have your child walk around the shoe store to check for comfort.

  10. Make sure the heel doesn’t slip up and down. They shouldn’t need to “break them in.”

You may be into recycling, but don’t let your child wear hand-me-down shoes. They will have molded to the previous owner’s foot and will not fit your child properly. Your child may also pick up unwanted bacteria and fungi.

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect time to bring your child in for a comprehensive foot evaluation. We will discuss any concerns you may have, check your child’s gait, diagnose any problems, and put together a unique treatment plan.
